Abstract

Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) is used as a key machining process for cutting hard, electrically conductive materials into complex and highly precise shape in die and mold making industry. The performance of the WEDM is represented by the average discharge frequency, volume removed by single discharge, feedback voltage and overcut. The wire composition has been an important factor in improving the overall performance and application potential of WEDM. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental evaluation of 10 different commercially available wires on the basis of the wire performance, and scanning electron microscopic study of the wire surface.
