Abstract

The design of source coders is generally based on the assumption of a noise-free channel. Error protection is provided by the channel coder which is designed assuming the source coder output does not contain any redundancy. Neither assumption is correct, however. The authors instead use the redundancy of the source coder output to provide error protection. A maximum-likelihood decoder is used as a preprocessor for the DPCM receiver to reduce error effects. The results confirm the utility of this approach.
