The speech synthesis or print output of augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) techniques may be effective in communicating foreground messages; however, they may obscure or even distort the background messages of social closeness. Many of the strategies used by normal speaking individuals to communicate background messages will probably not be effective for persons using AAC techniques; therefore, as clinical researchers, we will need to document the successful strategies that allow AAC system users to communicate background messages that convey emotion and mood.
