The role of aldose reductase in the development of diabetic complications of the lens and cornea

Abstract

In summary, the accumulation of polyols initiated by aldose reductase is associated with altered morphology and/or function of the lens, corneal epithelium and corneal endothelium. Prevention studies with aldose reductase inhibitors in either diabetic or galactose-fed animals indicate that these changes can be ameliorated and these results provide strong clinical implications. Although there are many similarities between these animal studies and man, long-term clinical evaluations with aldose reductase inhibitors are required to establish firmly the clinical ralationship between aldose reductase and the onset of diabetic cataracts and keratopathy.
