Sulfonated diels-alder polyphenylenes: Synthesis and properties of a novel polyelectrolyte

Abstract

Currently, Nafion is almost exclusively used in hydrogen and methanol fuel cells because of its excellent proton conductivity, chemical stability, and electrical insulating properties. However, these properties come at a high material cost owing to the extensive research in the area of alternative polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) materials. A study was carried out to lower PEM costs, reduce the high methanol permeability associated with Nafion, and increase the function of the PEM to higher temperatures and lower relative humidities. Various sulfonated themoplastics, e.g., polyetherketones, polyethersulfones, polyphosphazenes, polybenzoimidazoles, and poly(arylenes). Poly(phenylenes) represented another potential class of materials for proton exchange membranes. The parent materials displayed excellent thermal and chemical stability and were readily functionalized. The properties and performance in a fuel cell were discussed.
