Abstract

Recently, the threat of biological terrorism with the variola virus and a global influenza pandemic due to the limited supply of vaccines has prompted several research studies evaluating fractionated dose vaccination programs and promising results on immunogenicity have been obtained. This strategy is not new, having been applied to vaccines for less sensational diseases which, nevertheless, cause substantial mortality. The present article reviews essential knowledge on vaccination as pertaining to current immunization strategies in children. Unexplored strategies to reduce the costs of vaccine provision and the possibility of saving more lives with currently available resources are also discussed.
