Results of wavelet image compression on CT-based clinical radiation oncology treatment planning

Abstract

The influence of wavelet compression on calculated dose distribution is investigated as regards to CT-based radiotherapy planning. Chest CT images for radiotherapy were compressed and a treatment plan was constructed to generate a dose distribution within the CT image. The compressed images were analyzed using dose volume histograms (DVH) and compared to DVHs generated for uncompressed images. The lossy wavelet compression irreversibly changes pixel values in the CT, giving rise to errors in the dose calculations performed by treatment planning systems that account for tissue inhomogeneities in the image.
