Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to investigate the spectral features of reflectance of productive inland and coastal waters in order to find spectral features which are closely related to phytoplankton density and chlorophyll concentration; and, (2) to devise and validate algorithms for chlorophyll estimation using reflectance data as the measured variables. We found that the information gained from the red (around 675 nm) and red edge (near 700 nm) spectral regions were sufficient for the construction of algorithms for phytoplankton density estimation These algorithms were calibrated and validated in Lake Kinneret, and then applied to estimate chlorophyll concentration in numerous lakes and reservoirs with slight modification of the coefficients.
