Abstract

This paper reviews the benefits of nanotechnology for the textile industry and its potential health and environmental risks. The use of nanotechnology in textiles can allow for the control of crystal structure, improved mechanical properties, improved resistance to chemicals, microbes, flame, and heat, improved electrical properties, improved coloration ability, and self-cleaning clothing. This paper includes a review of studies on the toxicity of metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes, and developments in the legislation of nanoparticle materials.
