Abstract

We present a descriptive series of four clinical cases of the treatment of aggressive, as well as other severe behavior disorders, of adults with mental retardation and mental illness. In all cases, the patients' aggressive behavior was diagnosed as being related primarily to their mental illness rather than solely to their mental retardation. Pharmacological management was successfully used to control the aggressive behavior of all patients. Considerations in the pharmacological treatment of severe behavior problems in persons with mental retardation and mental illness are discussed.
