Abstract

Parenting is a critical issue for parents and their adolescent children. Efforts to characterize parenting generally have taken one of the three approaches, focusing on specific parenting practices, global parenting dimensions, or parenting styles. Despite considerable overlap among these constructs, they differ in important ways, and each offers a distinct framework for conceptualizing parenting. In this article, we review these constructs, discuss how they differ, and summarize the empirical research linking them to adolescent well-being. We also examine areas of controversy regarding these constructs, particularly the idea that key features of parenting, as well as the effects of parenting styles, dimensions, and practices, may vary across cultural groups and ecological settings.
