Abstract

Data mining is the process of deriving useful knowledge from real-world databases through the application of pattern extraction techniques. There are many problems and challenges to be overcome, most of which emanate from the nature or properties of real-world data. A perspective that explains the goals of, and motivation for, research work on data mining is given and the nature of database contents, along with the problems and issues, that make the field of data mining unique and challenging are discussed.
