Inactivation of transforming DNA by a transient product of the interaction of Cu2+ and hydroquinone

Abstract

Cu2+ and hydroquinone interact to produce a transient inactivator(s) of the transforming activity of isolated double-stranded DNA from Bacillus, subtilis. The inactivation is single-hit. Though highly sensitive to the inactivator(s), the transforming activity of the DNA is still much less sensitive than the transfectivity of single-stranded RNA isolated from poliovirions, as determined by direct comparison using a mixture of the bacterial DNA and viral RNA.
