High harmonic generation in plasmas by relativistic Thomson scattering

Abstract

Generation of high-order harmonics in plasmas using relativistic Thomson scattering was demonstrated. Experiments were performed with a Nd:glass laser with a peak intensity I=1018Wcm-2 interacting with an underdense plasma. In the spectrum the horizontal axis denoted wavelength and the vertical axis was proportional to the spatial extent of the emission. It was found that the harmonics were emitted as a beam in the forward direction with a narrow cone angle (2-3 degrees).
