Fast Atom Bombardment Combined with Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Structural Studies of Substituted Cyclic Perfluoroalkanesulfonates

Abstract

Fast atom bombardment (FAB) and tandem mass spectrometry were demonstrated to be useful for characterizing cyclic perfluoroaikanesuifonates. Abundant parent Ions appeared In both the positive and negative Ion FAB spectra, yielding molecular weight and counterion Information. Because these stable parent lons undergo little fragmentation, collision activated dissociation (CAD) spectra were acquired to provide structural Information. The CAD spectra of parent anions yield information to verify the cyclic nature of the compounds and to elucidate the size, number, and nature of the ring substituent. Relative abundances of CAD fragments suggest greater stability for the cyclic carbanions compared to their straight chain analogues.
