Abstract

This study proposes the design of a cost effective retrofit method for progressive collapse that can be externally applied to existing masonry structures. An existing load-bearing masonry wall structure was investigated for progressive collapse resistance considering various wall-opening scenarios. Using commercially available finite element programs and the guidelines set forth by UFC 04-023-03, progressive collapse analysis was carried out on the macro model of the existing structure (i.e. entire building). Based on the deficiencies found, an externally applied retrofit system was then investigated using micro models of a deficient isolated wall with the appropriate boundary conditions. The analysis and design of retrofit carried out followed the relevant codes in United States.
