Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of changing parameters of the stimulating electrode and the stimulus pulse by recording electrically elicited action potential responses from retinal ganglion cells in isolated rabbit retina. The parameters tested were biphasic pulse duration (1, 0.5, 0.1 mS), stimulating electrode size (10 micron diameter (microelectrode) and 125 micron diameter (macroelectrode), and electrode position (ganglion side or photoreceptor side). The stimulating electrodes were configured as a dipole, with source and sink separated by 300-400 microns (macroelectrodes) or 125 microns (microelectrodes). Tungsten wire recording electrodes were positioned between the stimulating electrodes and the optic disk.
