Effects of preglomerular and postglomerular vascular resistance alterations on filtration fraction

Abstract

In a variety of physiologic conditions, and across a wide range of values for single nephron vascular resistances, micropuncture data reveal a significant tendency for afferent and efferent resistances to change in parallel. Such concomitant changes in pre- and postglomerular resistances can influence filtration fraction, as can specific alterations in afferent resistance or in the glomerular ultrafiltration coefficient. The quantitative responses to these various alterations can be quite complex, and not always intuitively obvious. It is possible, however, to examine such issues with the assistance of a computer model of glomerular dynamics. In this brief report, we specifically assess the influence of pre- and postglomerular resistance alterations on filtration fraction.
