Abstract

Using the two-stage processing model of visual information, a U-shaped relation between grouping and performance was proposed. The model was tested for sixty subjects who participated in a nine-bit/stimulus information-processing task. The effect of grouping on latency was barely significant, and then only for initial trials. However, the effect of grouping on accuracy was consistently significant across all trials. While the model seemed to account for the initial grouping effect, it is felt that differences in the strategy adopted by the subjects in the within-group processing may have been contributing more to the grouping effect.
