Abstract

The suitable dye classes and dyeing conditions such as time, temperature, and pH for poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) textiles were examined. Colorfastness to laundering, crocking, light, etc. was evaluated. The most suitable dye class for 100% PTT was disperse dyes. Unlike poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), the material could be dyed under atmospheric conditions without using carriers. PTT dyed at 100C had a similar shade depth to PET dyed at 130C with the same dyebath compositions. In addition, no acidic pH adjustment was required due to the low dyeing temperature. A broad pH range is suitable for PTT dyeing with disperse dyes. The temperature and pH flexibility of PTT dyeing is an advantage not only for dyeing 100% PTT, but also for dyeing blends or mixtures with PTT.
