Abstract

Dyeability of silk fabric finished with trimethylol melamine (TMM) before or after dyeing is studied in terms of colour strength, colourfastness to laundering and colourfastness to crocking. The dyes used are acid, direct and basic dyes. The influence of dyeing on durable press effct of TMM is also examined by the wrinkle recovery angle and the durable press rating of both groups of silk fabrics. Unlike cellulosic fabrics, durable-press finishing of silk interferes only slightly with dyeing, regardless of the order of finish and dye application.
