Bulk and interfacial properties of a dipolar-quadrupolar fluid in a uniform electric field: A density-functional approach

Abstract

The bulk and interfacial properties of a dipolar-quadrupolar fluid in a uniform electric field were discussed. It was found that when the quadrupole moment was positive, the reduction in the surface tension was greater when the applied field was in direction from the vapor to the liquid phase than the reduction when the field was in the opposite direction. The phenomenon of the sign preference in liquid droplet formation on charged condensation centers was also elaborated.
