Abstract

As the computer industry nears the 21st century, IBM Research is working to provide creative solutions to address those issues needed to minimize environmental impact, enhance global competitiveness, and address regulatory issues without sacrificing quality, productivity, and cost. Currently, IBM Research is developing technology to provide improved materials and processes to fabricate printed circuit boards (PCB). It is developing a technology to provide `Green Card,' whose objectives include: eliminating the solvents and reducing the energy required to fabricate PCB prepreg by developing microwave technology; and developing new resin systems and alternatives to lead-based solder.
