Ancillary diagnostic opportunities: Harnessing circulating tumor cells, tumor educated platelets, and extracellular vesicles for the early detection of pancreatic cancer

Abstract

The convergence of numerous malevolent features uniquely manifested in pancreatic cancer has made this malignancy one of the most deadly illnesses we have encountered. Owing to the combination of a belated diagnosis, an early dissemination, and equally rapid microenviornmental remodeling, an early diagnostic strategy has yet to materialize. However, recent identification and adaption of a number of ancillary diagnostic methods have been implemented to exploit these observations. Indeed circulating tumor cells, tumor educated platelets, and extracellular vesicles are rapidly being investigated for their utility as both novel and significant diagnostic biosources. Consequently, implementation of a strategy which exploits these novel markers for pancreatic cancer may promote early detection of pancreatic cancer and encourage a more favorable patient outcome.
