A Performance comparison of grid-based data dissemination protocols for large-scale wireless sensor networks

Abstract

Data dissemination protocol affects the lifetime and performance of the large-scale sensor network. Many researchers addressed the design issues of data dissemination protocols. Accurate assessment of performance difference between protocols is important not only for a comparison purpose but also for new design for emerging applications. This paper compares the performance of three grid-based protocols: Two-Tier Data Dissemination (TTDD), Efficient Data Dissemination and Aggregation (EDDA), and On-Demand Data Dissemination (ODDD). The simulation results provide useful insights. First, non-uniform grid and grid sharing attain high success rate of over 82 %. Second, energy is significantly saved by grid sharing and non-uniform grid. Third, grid sharing and non-uniform grid construction increases packet delay.
