A New Model Reference Adaptive Control of EDM

Abstract

A model reference adaptive control system and a new servo control interface circuit developed to overcome the practical difficulties of poor flushing conditions encountered during many EDM operations are reported in this paper. The proposed digital control system uses a reference model to specify the desired performance of EDM and the random as well as time variant changes of the process are compensated by adjusting the feed forward gain. The experiments of machining deep holes using Eltee Pulsitron TRM 20/EP 30 EDM unit show that the proposed adaptive control system improves the machining productivity by almost 50% and reduces the workpiece damage by avoiding arcing. The new servo control circuit improves the range and stability of the existing servo mechanism leading to an overall performance improvement of approximately 40%.
