A new figure of merit for solar selective surfaces

Abstract

This paper introduces a new figure of merit for design of solar selective material systems. Examples are presented to illustrate its usefulness. For many years, researchers have been trying to develop surfaces with high solar absorption and low thermal emission [1]. These solar selective surfaces have high visible reflectance and low infrared reflectance. To make more efficient films, researchers need figure of merit to quantify efficiency and compare materials and structures. This paper discusses a few common figures of merit and introduces a new one. The motivation for a new figure is the ability to do predictive optical modeling.
